1,675 vehicles were detected travelling in excess of speed limits over 24 hours.

A motorbike was detected travelling at 182km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Offaly during National Slow Down Day.

Gardaí say the incident occurred on Church Street in the town of Clara as they conducted the national speed enforcement operation.

It took place for a 24-hour period from 7am on Tuesday to 7am on Wednesday and consisted of high visibility speed enforcement in 1,322 speed enforcement zones.

Supported by the Road Safety Authority, Gardaí say the aim of National Slow Down Day is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, to increase compliance with speed limits and to act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.

“I want to once again thank the vast majority of drivers who drive safely within the speed limits,” Chief Superintendent Michael Hennebry, Garda National Roads Policing Bureau, said in a statement following the operation.

“Unfortunately, we have yet again seen during our ‘Slow Down’ campaign that there are still a minority of drivers who choose to ignore the legal speed limits and public warnings.

“We will continue to focus on those non-compliant drivers who drive in excess of the speed limit, posing a significant risk to themselves and other road users.

“Please remember that each time a driver exceeds a speed limit it could result in a serious injury or fatal collision.

“Please continue to support our efforts to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries.”
