The happiest country has held the top spot for five years.

An annual UN-sponsored index has ranked Ireland as the 13th happiest country in the world.

After launching ten years ago, the World Happiness Report’s findings are based on people’s evaluation of their happiness, along with economic and social data.

For the fifth year in a row, Finland took the top spot as the happiest country in the world.

Rounding out the top five were Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Ireland ranked 13th in between Australia in the 12th spot and Germany at 14, while the United Kingdom placed 17th.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan ranked last on the list in the 146th position after its takeover by the Taliban in 2021.

One of the authors of the report, Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, noted that at the very bottom of the happiness ranking are societies suffering from conflict and extreme poverty.

“This presents a stark reminder of the material and immaterial damage that war does to its many victims and the fundamental importance of peace and stability for human well-being,” he said.

The 2022 happiness report was completed prior to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
