Rubbish

Some areas in your county probably made the list.

A survey by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) has revealed that Fermoy, Co Cork was Ireland’s cleanest town in 2018.

Elsewhere, Waterford City has retained the accolade of being Ireland’s cleanest city. The survey also revealed that just under 90% of Irish towns were deemed to be clean last year, with Athlone and Killarney finishing behind Fermoy in second and third place respectively.

An Taisce, who carry out the surveys on behalf of IBAL, praised Fermoy as having “exceeded its usual high standards of cleanliness”.

Elsewhere, the following towns/areas were all classified as cleaner than European norms.

1 Fermoy
2 Athlone
Killarney
Naas
5 Navan
6 Sligo
Drogheda
8 Waterford City Centre
9 Kilkenny
9 Dundalk
11 Longford
12 Castlebar
13 Tallaght

Commenting on the results, Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton said: “Combating litter is part of a much wider challenge – how we use our resources effectively and adapt to recognise environmental damage more generally. Litter is a very tangible, visible example of the kind of damage that is being done.

“It is vital that communities, businesses and local authorities in towns all across Ireland, work together to manage waste properly and reduce litter. I hope the recognition these awards provide spur others on to come together to make changes in their local areas.”

IBAL said that while Galway city registered its best result in years, a particular area in Galway City (Ballybane) and Dublin’s North Inner City have been defined as ‘seriously littered’, with both areas suffering from a variety of litter blackspots.

Elsewhere, Ballymun (Dublin), Cork City (Mahon), and Cork City’s northside have all been deemed as ‘littered.’
