It looks like we’ll be reeling in the New Year with a LOT of rain

Ellen Fitzpatrick

Wrap up warm.

While New Year’s Eve is typically a day when people want to dress up in their best clothes, this year you might want to wear something a little bit warmer.

That’s because it looks like we’ll be reeling in the New Year with some less-than-ideal weather as forecasters have warned that wind, rain and freezing temperatures are on the horizon.

The weekend is set to bring with it spells of rain and showers with frost also making an appearance.

A low-pressure system is travelling across the Atlantic, after the US has experienced extreme cold, and is making its way toward Ireland.

Today (Friday, 30 December) is set to see widespread outbreaks of rain, which will cause localised flooding in places.

Saturday and Sunday will also see widespread showers, with sleet and snow possible on New Year’s Day on higher ground.

Temperatures will remain mild at 9 degrees today but are set to drip overnight to as low as -4 on Saturday and -3 on Sunday.

One forecaster said: “It does look like there will be scattered outbreaks of rain and they may fall as sleet and possibly snow on higher ground.

“It could be dodgy for drivers going out on New Year’s Eve, we’re expecting some frost and icy stretches, especially in the northwest.”
