New Year’s Eve could bring stunning Northern Lights display over Ireland

Sophie Collins

One particular part of Ireland may be more likely to see the celestial event.

Ireland could ring in the New Year with a stunning natural light show, as the Northern Lights are forecasted to grace the night skies.

According to Aurora Alerts Ireland, this rare phenomenon might be visible across large parts of the country tonight (Tuesday, 31 December).

The dazzling display is linked to heightened solar flare activity recorded in recent days.

If skies remain clear, the Aurora Borealis could light up the horizon as far south as Dublin, offering a memorable sight from 6:00 pm this evening until 3:00 am on New Year’s Day.

However, weather conditions might dampen the experience in some regions, potentially obstructing views of the celestial event.

Speaking about this, Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said: “There could be a display of Northern Lights [on] New Year’s Eve night but the problem is… a lot of cloud forecast.

“We might get a few breaks in the north, could get lucky. But elsewhere, it’s probably going to be spoiled by cloud.”

A 24-hour status yellow rain alert for Cork and Kerry began at 6:00 am today.

While not all areas may enjoy clear skies, those fortunate enough to avoid the cloud cover could witness an unforgettable start to 2025.
