New Zealand acting Prime Minister causes controversy by insulting an MP’s weight in parliament

Alan Loughnane

New Zealand Prime Minister

Wow…

It may have been his last day, but acting prime minister of New Zealand, Winston Peters wasn’t going to leave without causing a bit of a stir.

Peters is acting Prime Minister while Jacinda Ardern is on maternity leave, although she returns on Thursday, and on his final day he called on the Speaker of the House to “throw fatty out”.

Peters’s comment during a heated debate in parliament. Jeering and whistling from the opposition was so loud that the Speaker said he could not hear what Tracey Martin, a New Zealand First MP, speaking.

“Opposition members’ barracking is coming through my mics, I’m first of all going to have the shadow leader of the House withdraw and apologise.”

Peters interjected saying: “Yeah, throw fatty out.”

Peters has been in the news over the past few weeks as he recently accused Australia of copying the New Zealand flag and demanded that Australia change their flag.

The flag the country has been using for over 60 years…

“We had a flag that we’ve had for a long time, copied by Australia, and they should actually change their flag and honour the fact that we got there first with this design, being decided by a Prime Minister and his legacy,” Peters told TVNZ.

The New Zealand flag was adopted in March, 1902, followed by Australia’s adoption in April, 1954.
