"Addiction and mental illness is the real villain" – Nick Carter shares heartbreaking tribute to his late brother Aaron
"Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded."
Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter has shared a tribute to his brother Aaron.
Over the weekend, it was reported that Aaron had passed away at the age of 34.
In a statement, a representative for the pop star confirmed the news and said: "We're just as upset as everybody and hope that fans can give their thoughts and prayers to his family."
Nick has since shared a personal tribute to his younger brother.
In a post shared on Facebook and Instagram, he said that his heart is "broken".
He wrote: "Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.
"Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here. I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you Chizz. Now you can finally have the peace you could never find here on earth…. I love you baby brother."
Nick also shared a number of childhood photos with Aaron. This weekend saw a number of other celebrities pay tribute to Aaron.
On Twitter, Paris Hilton wrote that she was "so sad" to hear of the news, and recalled how Aaron was "always kind" to her family.
"He had a good heart," she wrote. "Gone way too soon."
Hilary Duff, who dated Aaron many years ago, also paid tribute.
In a post on Instagram, she wrote: "I am deeply sorry that life was so hard and that you had to struggle in front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent."
