Now working to contact those affected, the HSE has confirmed that a "significant number" of people have been affected by a Norovirus outbreak at a luxury hotel in Co Westmeath.

A spokesperson for Glasson Lakehouse said it has taken "precautionary measure", while it "absolutely regrets" the temporary closure.

Recent guests and staff exhibited symptoms of norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea, to which the HSE was notified.

"In consultation with the HSE, we implemented a voluntary closure of the hotel and are working closely with the HSE to carry out all appropriate control measures as per their recommendations," the spokesperson said.

"We deeply regret the impact this outbreak has had on our guests.

"We are doing everything we can to look after everyone affected and are seeking alternative venues for guests and events to minimise the inconvenience caused."

The hotel said it would update on reopening as soon as possible, as reported by RTÉ News.

The HSE investigation

The HSE said its public health team is working with the HSE National Environmental Health Service and the hotel to "ensure all appropriate actions are being taken".

With the HSE's investigation on going, norovirus is one of the most common stomach bugs in Ireland and is better known as the winter vomiting bug.

As an August closure shows, you can pick it up at any time of year.

Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, muscle aches and loss of appetite.

It follows an HSE warning about vapes sold in Irish shops, and lands in a busy stretch that has seen Clare hotels booked out ahead of Trump's Doonbeg visit.
