HSE finds high-risk synthetic cannabinoids in vapes sold in Irish shops

The HSE has uncovered a worrying mix of substances

An investigation by the HSE’s Emerging Drug Trends Laboratory has uncovered a range of unexpected substances in vapes, vape liquids and edible products being sold across Ireland.

Researchers examined 76 vape products, as well as edibles bought from shops in towns and cities and products sourced from the black market.

Of those tested, 28 contained semi-synthetic cannabinoids, which are man-made compounds intended to produce effects similar to cannabis. The analysis also found 8 products containing powerful synthetic cannabinoids, while 10 contained a substance that has been linked to lung disease. Another 12 contained cannabis or related compounds, and 41 contained CBD.

The findings have raised concerns over the potential health effects of these products, with the HSE warning that some of the substances identified have been associated with severe intoxication, psychosis and loss of consciousness, as well as other serious physical and mental health problems.

Calls are growing for a crackdown on illegal vape sellers

The risks surrounding unregulated vape products have already been highlighted by incidents in Ireland. On one occasion, cannabis vapes were involved in an incident that saw two Gardaí require hospital treatment, while a Garda station was also forced to close.

The latest findings come amid a wider concern over how quickly new and potentially harmful drugs can appear on the Irish market, with a number of major seizures in recent years demonstrating how rapidly these substances can spread.

Responsible Vaping Ireland, which represents more than 3,200 independent vape retailers, said the HSE’s latest analysis highlights the need for stronger action against sellers operating outside the legal market.

"Today’s findings from the HSE reinforce our long-standing concern as responsible retailers about the growth of unregulated products being sold through illicit channels. Government must now step up enforcement against these rogue operators."

The organisation has previously pushed for stricter inspections and a tax stamp system that would make it easier to identify products entering the legal market and distinguish them from unregulated alternatives.
