The cause of the fire has not yet been made clear, but according to BBC, officials say it could be linked to renovation work.
Images on social media showed a fire at the cathedral on Monday evening.
It has not yet been made clear whether any people have been injured in the fire, but a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
A video shared by CBS Los Angeles on Twitter showed the extent of the fire.

The Mayor of Paris posted a message to her official Twitter account where she urged everyone to stay out of the area in question.
