The tweet has since been deleted.
The Law Department of NUI Maynooth has apologised for tweet it sent to a student on Saturday evening.
Asked by a student about an exam timetable which saw two major exams take place one day after another, the account responded: “First, we don’t make the timetable. Second, assuming you have been studying all year, and not leaving things to the last minute, it shouldn’t be a problem. Third, you do remember the Leaving Cert, right?”
The original question had also pointed out that stressful exam timetables can affect the mental health of students.
Following a widespread backlash against their response, the university has deleted the tweet and issued an apology on Twitter, which reads: “The Department apologises unreservedly for the tweet to [the student]. It was intended to be funny. It wasn’t. It was ill-judged and unthoughtful. Crucially, it does not reflect our approach to student support, which we treat with the utmost importance, at all times.”
