The incident occurred on Wednesday morning.

Gardaí are investigating a robbery that took place in a post office in Offaly on Wednesday morning, 18 December.

At approximately 9.30am, two men wearing balaclavas entered the premises in Clara, armed with what is believed to be both a firearm and a knife.

Staff were threatened during the altercation that followed.

The men subsequently left the post office with an undisclosed sum of cash and drove away in a silver Toyota Avensis with an 07 Dublin registration.

This car was later discovered on fire on the Kilbeggan Road on the outskirts of Clara. It is understood that the men left from this area in what has been described as a dark hatchback vehicle.

Gardaí in Tullamore have issued an appeal for witnesses and anyone with relevant information to come forward.

They are particularly appealing to any road users with camera footage who were travelling in the area at the time to contact them as well as any sightings of a silver Toyota Avensis or a dark hatchback car as described above.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Tullamore Garda Station on 057 932 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
