OJ Simpson has been described as a “completely free man” following his discharge from parole.

The former American football star was granted good behaviour credits and was free to walk effective from 1 December.

He had served nine years of a 33-year sentence following an armed robbery in Nevada, where he led a group of armed men to the Palace-Station hotel casino and stole sports memorabilia.

He was released from prison in October 2017, but remained under a parole order until Tuesday (14 December).

Simpson’s lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne described OJ as a “completely free man” following the ruling.

Both Simpson and LaVergne are yet to make a comment on the star’s future since the ruling.

Simpson has been in regular legal trouble since the early 1990s.

In 1994, he was arrested and charged for the murder of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, where he was later acquitted.

Simpson engaged in a high-speed chase through LA with police officers in his white Bronco, which was captured in its entirety on film.

One of the key pieces of evidence for the defence revolved around a glove that was found on the scene, saying that “if the glove didn’t fit, you must acquit”.

The trial was described as the “trial of the century” at the time, with 100 million viewers tuning in to watch the verdict.

The saga was recently dramatised in the FX mini-series The People V. OJ Simpson; American Crime Story, which won multiple Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

OJ was found guilty in a civil lawsuit of being responsible for Brown and Goldman’s deaths later, and was ordered to pay damages of $33.5 million to the families.

Simpson had been arrested for simple battery and burglary in 2001, but was acquitted once again.

OJ has since returned to social media, regularly posting his thoughts on American football on Twitter.
