This comes as hospitalisations and ICU admissions are rising rapidly, “causing major concern”.

Tony Holohan has said that older people should stay at home, as hospitalisations continue to rise.

As of Sunday morning, there are 673 patients in hospitals across the country with Covid-19.

This is more than double the amount that were in hospital with the virus on this day last week.

Chief Clinical Officer in the HSE Colm Henry says we could see 3,000 Covid patients in our hospitals if the growing rates continue.

Tony Holohan echoed his statements, saying: “Hospitalisations are rising to levels close to what we saw in the springtime. Everyone needs to stay at home other than for essential work or care.

“This includes asking neighbours or family to carry out errands such as grocery shopping, limiting all contacts to only those people you live with or have to visit for essential care reasons.

“We need to rediscover the spirit of solidarity and community we saw in March and April so that we can all do our part in protecting older and vulnerable people.”

This comes after 3,394 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed on Saturday evening, as well four additional deaths.

This high figure comes as Ireland works through a backlog of around 9,000 positive cases, which is now being cleared.
