Paddy’s weekend is saved as planned strike action is blocked at Ireland’s major airports

Anyone planning on coming into or leaving Ireland this weekend can breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Anyone planning on coming into or leaving Ireland this weekend can breathe a huge sigh of relief.

It had looked as if this weekend could be a bit of chaotic one for travellers as Siptu members had planned a four-hour work stoppage at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports in response to planned cuts on pensions by Aer Lingus and the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

Both Ryanair and the DAA had brought proceedings against Siptu and asked the High Court to grant injunctions preventing the strike action until the disputes had reached a full resolution, arguing that it was illegal and would cause havoc and maximum disruption in the airports on one of the busiest travelling weekends of the year.

Siptu, for their part, had argued that they were well within their rights to go ahead with the strike to protect the pension rights of their workers.

According to The Irish Times, Mr Justice Paul Gilligan granted an injunction preventing the strike from going ahead in his judgement earlier this afternoon, ensuring that for this weekend at least, it will be business as usual in three of the busiest airports in the country.
