Four officers killed by co-worker in Paris police headquarters

Rory Cashin

French media are reporting that the knife-wielding man was later shot dead by police.

At approximately 1pm local time, a 45-year-old man attacked multiple staff at the Paris police headquarters.

Four people were killed, and a fifth was injured, before the attacker was shot dead.

BBC News reports that while the man has not yet been named, it has been confirmed that he too worked at the Paris police headquarters, and had done for the last 20 years.

An eyewitness told local newspaper Le Parisien that “around me there were only police, they immediately all unsheathed their weapon. It’s not the place where you imagine it can happen.

“Moments later, I saw policewomen in tears. I thought it must be serious. They were in panic, it was running everywhere. Many people were in tears.”

This incident takes place just one day after police all over France went on strike, in retaliation for increased violence towards police around the country.

It is also reported that President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, and Interior Minister Christophe Castaner have all since visited the site of the attack.
