Pat Kenny says he was “offered a spliff” the last time he took the DART

The Newstalk host revealed he was asked: “Hey Pat, do you want a spliff?”

Pat Kenny told listeners of his Newstalk show that the last time he took the DART train service he was “offered a spliff”.

The host made the comments when discussing reports that rail staff across the country are set to vote next week on industrial action.

Members of the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) are calling for Irish Rail to protect its workers from “anti-social behaviour”.

Having written a letter to Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Transport Minister Eamon Ryan and the Irish Rail CEO, the union said incidents of “downright thuggery” on trains have “now gone well beyond a tipping point.”

After receiving stories from listeners about their own experiences on Irish trains, Kenny shared the anecdote.

While the host said he knows the people who offered him the cannabis cigarette were “messing”, he added that he could see how others could be intimidated by such an interaction.

“I mean, it happened to me on the DART, the last time I took the DART, I was offered a spliff,” he shared.

“‘Hey Pat, do you want a spliff?’ I mean, I know they were messing with me but at the same time, I could observe the kind of intimidation that people felt with that carry on.”
