Peter Casey has changed his plans to visit proposed accommodation for the Travelling community in Cabraghbridge, Tipperary.

Casey’s official itinerary for today (18 October) had originally included the line: “Visiting the houses at Cabrabridge, Thurles, Tipperary which members of the travelling community refused”. The visit was originally scheduled for between 4pm and 4.30pm.

However, a revised version of the itinerary has been sent around on Thursday morning. It now states that Casey will visit Cabraghbridge between 3pm and 4pm, and it no longer carries any reference to the Travelling community. It now simply reads: “Visiting Cabra Bridge, Thurles, Tipperary”.

The schedule has also added a visit to Hayes Hotel, Liberty Square, Thurles, Tipperary between 4pm and 4.30pm.

Pavee Point, an NGO representing that Travelling community in Ireland, had announce its intention to protest Casey’s visit at its original time of 4pm.

Casey has come in for criticism from each of his fellow candidates over the comments he made about the Travelling community.

Pavee Point also issued a statement refuting Casey’s claims, saying: “We have never asked for houses. We never asked for stables. And we never asked for paddocks”.

The organisation’s statement can be read in full here.
