Pic: 12 parishes over 134 kilometres; the epic 12 pubs crawl being undertaken by a group of Mayo lads today

If you happen to run into these lads at any stage today do buy them a drink, won’t you? They certainly deserve it.

The whole 12 pubs of Christmas phenomenon is in danger of becoming a little tired and clichéd at this stage; certainly it’s not exactly universally popular these days when seemingly everyone you encounter in a pub is wearing a Christmas jumper and observing one of the many rules imposed on everyone taking part.

That said, all is not lost if those participating in the festive pub crawl are prepared to go above and beyond the call of duty and that’s certainly what a group of lads in Mayo are doing on their own 12 pubs outing today.

Starting in the well-known establishment, Rocky’s of Castlebar, the lads involved are embarking on an epic 134km round trip taking in 12 different parishes in Mayo before no doubt returning to where they started, if they are even aware of their whereabouts at that stage.

In this author’s humble and in no way biased opinion, we find it strange that they are ignoring the centrally located Mayo town of Kiltimagh and its many fine drinking emporiums – it is, after all, within a 15-minute drive of eight of the towns listed above – but in fairness, it’s incredibly well-organised and includes plenty of lovely towns, villages and pubs as it is.

The lads will probably have their own list of rules attached, but if we could make one suggestion, it would be to possibly refrain from drinking cans on the bus or whatever form of transport they are travelling to and from the pubs in, but we wouldn’t be surprised if our advice is politely received and equally as politely ignored.
