There was a decline in the population in just three counties in Ireland.
The preliminary results of the 2016 Census were released on Thursday morning, revealing that Ireland’s population has jumped by just under 170,000 to approximately 4.75 million.
Shove over and make some room there, will ye?
A more detailed breakdown of the Census figures revealed that Fingal saw the biggest growth in population with 8.1%, followed by Meath (5.8%) and Kildare (5.6%).
Just three counties, all located in the west of Ireland, saw a decline in population since the last Census in 2011.
The decline was most noticeable in Donegal, where there was a decline of 1.5%, while there was also a fall in population numbers in Mayo (- 0.2%) and Sligo (- 0.1%).
You can see a county by county breakdown in full below; needless to say we’re going to have to open a few doors and windows because it’s getting awfully crowded around here.
