Pic: A Galway man is ripping it up on Countdown and he’s using words we’ve never heard of

Another reason to watch Countdown other than Rachel Reilly

Conor Heneghan

Continuing the proud West of Ireland linguistic tradition, and in some style too.

If you, like us, like nothing better than watching Countdown with a cup of tea of a midweek afternoon, then it’s made for more interesting viewing than usual this week.

We know what you’re thinking and no, it’s not because Rachel’s outfits have been of the more risqué variety, but because an Irishman is taking part and he’s absolutely flying it.

The man in question is Tuam man Kevin Steede, an occupational therapist based in Plymouth.

Yesterday, Kevin scored a highly impressive 101 points and it’s no wonder when you see some of the words he’s been coming out with.

Either Kevin is very well-read or he’s recently swallowed a dictionary because some of these even confounded the normally unflappable Susie Dent in dictionary corner.

As one of the JOEs pointed out, Kevin really missed a trick with his effort immediately above as the plural of Glioma is Gliomata, a fact we would have thought obvious to even the most adequately-functioning brain.

Kevin will be on again today on Channel 4 at 2.10pm and we’d like to wish him the kbetsoclu.

That’s ‘best o’luck’ for all you conundrum fans.
