An Irish rugby fan who was in Rome last weekend for Ireland's Six Nations game with Italy was arrested after allegedly attempting to take a gun off a member of the military.
A post on Rome Police Facebook page explains what happened, they say the man was out with a group of Irish people on Friday night when they walked by a number of soldiers who were near the Spanish embassy in the city.
The men started to sing at the soldiers and the post claims one of them began to mock the soldiers, got involved in a scuffle and tried to grab a machine gun from a soldier.
The Irishman was brought to police headquarters to be identified and then to nearby San Giovanni hospital for a health check. He spent the night in the prison and appeared before a local magistrate court on Saturday.
The Irish Sun report that the fan must return to court in Italy in June.
