Just interested observers or star-struck Irish fans waiting for the arrival in Krakow of the players they love to hate, the England squad? We’re not sure to be honest.

The video from the occasion, which included Irish fans welcoming the England players with chants of “You’ll never beat the Irish” and others, went viral here on JOE overnight.

Several commenters there questioned the motives of Irish supporters turning up to have a go – good-natured or otherwise – at players from a rival country in a city (Krakow) a couple of hundred miles from the venues for Ireland’s games in Poznan and Gdansk.

And the picture above, tweeted out by BBC football reporter Dan Roan on Wednesday evening, brilliantly captures the somewhat ambiguous relationship many Irish supporters have with English footballers.
