Nicknamed Underdog, there are now hundreds of South Africans who want to adopt the brave pooch.

If you visit South Africa, it is well worth taking time out to head to Kimberley, the historic centre of the diamond mine business in the country.

Its best-known feature is the imaginatively titled ‘Big Hole’. The original diamond mine of the area, it was started in 1871 and closed in 1914, after 3,000kg of diamonds were plucked from the earth, leaving a hole 215m deep.

Since its closure, the hole has picked up about 40m of water and is now a tourist attraction and over the last week, it became the centre of a new storm as a dog somehow found its way into the hole.

Spotted by tourists swimming in the water, the dog, nicknamed Underdog, was kept alive by tourists throwing food down but attempts to rescue it proved difficult.

Eventually, on Saturday, rescuers were winched down into the hole and managed to put a harness on the scared dog and rescue it.

It took five hours to pull off the rescue and the dog is now at a shelter, where hundreds of folks have applied to adopt the lucky canine.

How it got down there remains a mystery but at least this tale has a happy ending.
