PICs: Dublin Castle celebrates a year since the Yes vote in #MARREF

This time last year was one of the greatest days in Irish history.

Crowds gathered in Dublin Castle today to celebrate the first anniversary of the Marriage Referendum, in which 62% of the country voted to legalise same-sex marriages in Ireland.

It was quite a day, and 412 couples have since tied the knot under the new legislation.

Gráinne Healy, a co-director of YesEquality and chair of Marriage Equality, said: “It is a great joy to see the marriages that have taken place all around Ireland, with couples supported by their families, friends and communities in celebrating their love.

“Hundreds more couples had their foreign marriages automatically recognised.

“We are delighted to share this day with those that helped and supported Yes Equality and look forward to many more happy days out for couples who can share in our joy.”

While a record number of young people have come out in the last year, many issues remain.

56% of young people believe that homophobic or transphobic bullying has not stopped since the referendum.

“We took an extraordinary step forward for justice and equality for all citizens. However, we cannot assume that equality has been achieved and the job is done,” said Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald.

“While the future is secured, the present can still be a frightening place for LGBT+ young people. We need to keep saying YES to supporting young LGBT+ people.”
