“The average daily detection rate in 2015 was 76.”
An Garda Síochána have found over 110 Irish citizens holding their mobile phone while driving in just a three hour period, despite warning people in advance of their planned action.
The operation was undertaken between 10am and 1pm on Saturday, May 7.
Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid has said:
“It is very disappointing to discover that, even with advance warning, in excess of 110 drivers were found holding a mobile phone whilst driving”, Reid said.
“There is no doubt such a distraction contributes to collisions.
“Any distraction, not only mobile phones, can cause a momentary lapse in concentration which could lead to your vehicle veering off course, or preventing you from noticing the red traffic light or the child playing on the road.”
Gardaí have said that more similarly targeted operations will occur over the coming days.
Meanwhile, Gardaí have taken to Twitter to warn people to stay safe on the roads this Friday, the 13th.
Its Friday the 13th. Superstitious or not !. Drivers Reduce your speed.
Do not make it a Fatal Friday for your or any other family ! RT— An Garda Síochána (@GardaTraffic) May 12, 2016
