He released it back into the water immediately afterwards… after taking a quick picture, of course.
Many fishermen are renowned for exaggerating about the size of the fish they catch, but few can say they caught a great white shark and lived to tell the tale.
Irishman Kieran Casey is well-entitled to make that claim to fame, however, having caught a juvenile great white shark at Golden Beach in Victoria in Australia recently before releasing it back into the water (great whites are protected in Australia) and watching it swim away safely immediately afterwards.
Kieran, a keen fisherman from Kerry who’s currently living Down Under, tells us that he was fishing for bronze whaler sharks when he caught the juvenile great white having rowed a bait out 500 metres in a kayak.
He reckons the shark was about six foot long and, looking at the pictures, we’d be inclined to agree.
Kieran posed for a few quick pictures (taken by his wife Noelle Casey) with his very unlikely catch before releasing him back into the water.
Somewhat understandably, nobody felt like going swimming for some time afterwards.
