Pilot lands plane in Belfast… despite artificial arm falling off

Well this is certainly something you don't hear every day...

Well this is certainly something you don’t hear every day…

A pilot managed to successfully land a Flybe jet carrying 48 passengers… even though his prosthetic arm detached in the process of landing. The pilot, who has not been named, had clamped his arm to the controls before it became unattached from his body, but he managed to stay calm and land the plane safely in Belfast City Airport.

The Captain considered giving his controls over to the co-pilot but, in the end, he decided it was safer for him to continue the landing rather than pass controls to his subordinate.

‘A normal touchdown was followed by a bounce, from which the aircraft landed heavily,’ the Air Accident Investigations Branch said in a report published today.

Flybe’s director of operations and safety, Captain Ian Baston, said the company was proud to be an equal opportunities employer. ‘The captain is one of Flybe’s most experienced and trusted pilots. At no time was the safety of passengers compromised,’ he said.

The pilot has guaranteed that he will be better prepared in the future so as to avoid a repeat of the incident which happened back in February of this year. We imagine the co-pilot’s reaction was something similar to this…
