“This was a reckless attack by those responsible, and we are extremely fortunate that we are not dealing with any serious injuries, or worse.”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has commenced an official investigation following an incident at a house in the Enniskeen area of Craigavon in County Armagh on Saturday night.

A woman and a number of young children were in the house when a loud bang went off nearby sometime between 11.20pm and 11.30pm.

Residents were subsequently evacuated from their homes when PSNI officers responded to the alarm.

It was later confirmed that a device had been detonated outside the house.

No injuries were reported, nor was there any property damage.

A second pipe bomb device was discovered at the scene, with both being declared as viable.

Remnants of the exploded pipe bomb and the intact second device were seized by police and taken away for further forensic examination.

“I want to thank all those who were affected by the alert for their patience as we worked to make the scene safe,” said Detective Sergeant Foley.

“I appreciate the disruption this caused to residents who had to leave their homes, however, keeping people safe is our priority and we will not take any chances.

“This was a reckless attack by those responsible, and we are extremely fortunate that we are not dealing with any serious injuries, or worse today.

“Anyone could have picked up these potentially deadly devices, and those behind the attack have clearly no regard for the safety of the others.”

Foley noted that enquires are at an early stage and that the PSNI wish to appeal to anyone who was in the Enniskeen area on Saturday night and saw any suspicious activity or any suspicious vehicles to contact them on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1611.

Alternatively, information can also be provided to anonymous independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
