One man is currently still being held on suspicion of murder.

Police in Northern Ireland have raided two homes as part of their investigation into the discovery of 39 dead bodies in a refrigerated truck-trailer in Essex on Wednesday.

The UK’s National Crime Agency told BBC News that it was working to identify “organised crime groups who may have played a part”.

The driver of the truck was a 25-year-old man from Armagh, who remains under arrest on suspicion of murder by Essex Police.

Initially, there had been some investigations into the possibility that the truck may have arrived in the UK via Holyhead from an Irish port, but Gardaí are now satisfied that the victims were not trafficked via the Republic of Ireland.

In an update on Wednesday, Essex Police stated their belief that the trailer travelled from Zeebrugge in Belgium into Purfleet in England, docking in the Thurrock area.

Eric Van Duyse, a spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office, said an investigation into the incident was under way, stating: “We have no idea at the moment how long the lorry spent in Belgium, it could be hours or days, we just don’t know.”
