Apart from the order, the top five boys’ names in Ireland haven’t changed since 2007.

Jack and Emily were the most popular names for new babies born in Ireland in 2017, according to a report by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on Wednesday.

The popularity of both names isn’t exactly a new thing in Ireland, 2017 was the seventh successive year that Emily was the most popular name for girls in Ireland, while Jack has been the most popular name for boys in every year but one (2016) since 2007.

As far as boys’ names are concerned, Jack, James, Daniel, Conor and Sean have been the top five since 2007 with slight changes to their order; indeed, four of the top five boys’ names (Jack, Sean, Conor and James) have been in the top five since 1998.

Emma, Amelia, Grace and Sophie joined Emily in the top five girls’ names for 2017 and were amongst 4,493 girls’ names registered in 2017 compared to 3,472 boys’ names despite there being a greater number of male births in Ireland last year.

There were new entrants to the top 100 names in both sexes. Theo and Jackson, for example, were new entrants to the top 100 names for boys and were the names that enjoyed the greatest rise in popularity, increasing by 33 and 29 places respectively.

As far as the girls were concerned, there were four first time entrants to the top 100 for girls: Aoibhin, Nina, Pippa and Esme, with Aoibhin and Nina rising 82 and 41 places respectively to make the top 100.

Amongst the least popular names for boys were Saul, Seaghan and Marley, while Everly, Teegan and Romi were amongst the least commonly registered names for girls last year.
