“The meeting gave me comfort. I can’t believe he came down here. It just shows you why he’s our President.”

In case you’re not aware, Emma Mhic Mhathúna is a mother-of-five from Kerry that has being diagnosed with cervical cancer.  She was originally told that her smear test was clear in 2013. It wasn’t.

Three years later, her cancer was diagnosed and she was never told about the incorrect smear test.

During her incredibly powerful radio interview with Morning Ireland, Ms Mhic Mhathúna expressed her sheer heartbreak and despair while stating her belief that the HSE, Simon Harris, Leo Varadkar and the Government at large have let her down.

During Ms Mhic Mhathúna’s interview, there’s one sentence that captured the sheer despondency, anger and sadness that defined her misdiagnosis.

She said: “the only person that can do something now is the President. I never thought that I’d have to say something like that in this country in 2018.”

Well, President Michael D. Higgins has paid a visit to Emma and her family and she said that his presence and words have “made my own journey a little bit easier and he gave some comfort to my children.”

Ms Mhic Mhathúna also thinks that the visit by the President will add extra pressure on the Government to take decisive action.

“It’s a moment that the Government will have to recognise.I can’t keep up with the story at the moment but definitely by having the President coming to meet me shows that something somewhere has failed and that it will be addressed. He listened to everything I said. He had some very touching words and comforting words for me, especially knowing the road I have ahead.”

As reported by RTÉ, President Higgins described the meeting as “wonderful”.
