The van was taking the prisoner from court.
A prison van that was transporting a prisoner from court was rammed off the road by a car in Monaghan, according to reports.
Multiple outlets state that the incident occurred on the N2 at Clontibret on Wednesday evening (15 June).
Also on board the prison van was a number of Irish Prison Service staff.
No injuries have been reported from the collision and it is understood the prisoner remains in custody.
In a statement to JOE, a Garda spokesperson confirmed that an investigation into the “hit and run” incident had been launched.
“Gardaí in Monaghan are currently at scene of a hit and run road traffic collision that occurred this evening on Wednesday, 15 June, 2022,” they said.
“The collision involved an Irish Prison Escort Van and a car.
“No injuries have been reported at this time. Investigations ongoing.”
The Irish Prison Service also confirmed to JOE that an incident occurred on Wednesday involving a prison vehicle.
