Three prisoners safely removed after spending the night on roof of Mountjoy Prison

Four prisoners gained access to the roof of a building in the prison on Monday night.

The Irish Prison Service has confirmed that three prisoners have been successfully and safely removed after spending the night on the roof of a building in Mountjoy Prison in Dublin last night.

Four prisoners originally gained access to the roof on Monday night, but one came down while the other three remained on the roof overnight until approximately 8am on Tuesday morning (24 December).

The three prisoners were successfully and safely removed by specially trained staff.

The Director General of the Irish Prison Service has commended all the staff involved in ensuring that this incident was successfully resolved.

Senior management at Mountjoy Prison have commenced an investigation into the incident.
