Mixed week ahead on the weather front but very promising signs in store for next weekend

The traditional spell of pleasant back to school/college weather would be very welcome right now.

High pressure building in towards Ireland from Friday onwards is set to lead to an extended spell of dry and settled weather, with plenty of sunny spells, lasting until at least the middle of next week.

That’s according to the latest forecast from Met Éireann, which, inevitably when it comes to Ireland, comes with a caveat in that the weather between now and Friday will belong firmly in the mixed bag category.

Monday will be dry in most areas, barring occasional showers in western and southern counties from around midday onwards, with highest temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees.

After a damp and cloudy start there will be plenty of dry spells on Tuesday, but rain will arrive by evening time and become heavy in most areas on Tuesday night.

That rain will continue into Wednesday, which is set to be wet and breezy but also very mild, with temperatures reaching as high as 22 degrees in places.

Temperatures will drop slightly on Thursday on a day that will see a mix of showers – most frequent in the west of the country – and sunny spells, before conditions improve from Friday.

While it’s a bit early to be setting it in stone just yet, the provisional forecast predicts mostly dry and sunny weather throughout the weekend, barring an occasional shower on Friday and Saturday.

The settled weather is set to continue “into the early days of next week”, with highest temperatures of around 15 to 18 degrees, around, or slightly below, average for this time of year.

Given the ‘summer’ we’ve just had, we’ll take it.
