Referendum on the Eighth Amendment confirmed after bill passes final Oireachtas stage

The bill was passed on Wednesday afternoon.

The referendum to decide whether to repeal the Eighth Amendment has been set for Friday, 25 May.

Passing the fifth stage in the Seanad, the Referendum Bill was voted through by a total of 40 votes to 10.

The draft legislation was approved by the Dáil on 27 March, which stated that unrestricted abortion will be permitted up until the 12th week of pregnancy with a required seventy-two hour pass between seeking the procedure and its being carried out.

Health Minister Simon Harris and Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy are expected to hold a joint press conference in order to officially confirm the date.
