“For five years, I’ve been wanting to ask him that.”

US President Donald Trump failed to respond to a reporter in the White House on Thursday when he was asked if he regretted “all the lying you’ve done to the American people” during his presidency to date.

At a briefing on Thursday, S.V. Dáte, White House correspondent for HuffPost, asked Donald Trump: “Mr. President, after three and a half years (of his presidency), do you regret at all, all the lying you’ve done to the American people?”

“All the what?” Trump responded.

“All the lying, all the dishonesties,” Dáte replied.

“That who has done?” said Trump.

“That you have done. Tens of thousands…” Dáte replied, before Trump requested a question from another reporter and cut him off.

In a tweet posted after the briefing on Thursday, Dáte said he had wanted to ask Trump that question five years.

In fact, he told The Guardian that he had tried to ask it of Trump in March before he was cut off.

Maybe he didn’t recognise me this time,” he said.

“You know, he has this group of folks that he normally asks questions of.”

“I had always thought that if he ever did call on me, this is the one thing that is really central to his presidency,” Dáte said and added that Trump’s lying was the “singular piece of his presidency that will be remembered in 10 years”.

Dáte’s pinned tweet contains a link to an article he penned for HuffPost in January titled The Ministry of Untruth, which documents what Dáte claims is an “unending stream of lies” by the president and the impact it has had on the White House, the United States and the American people.

Dáte is not the only one to allege that the president is guilty of persistent lying, of course.

Last month, The Washington Post claimed that Trump had made over 20,000 false or misleading claims during his presidency, an average of 12 false of misleading claims per day.
