Five more people have died on the roads compared to this time last year.

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 80s have died following two separate road crashes in Cork and Donegal on Tuesday, April 23.

The number of people who have died on the roads in Ireland this year now stands at 66, an increase of 15 compared to figures from this time last year.

The collision in Cork occurred shortly before 6pm yesterday at Ballinahina at White’s Cross.

The man in his 20s, a motorcyclist, collided with a van and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. Nobody else was reported seriously injured.

In a statement to JOE on Tuesday, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a van and a motorcycle that occurred shortly before 6pm on Tuesday 23rd April 2024 at Ballinahina at White’s Cross in County Cork.

“The motorcyclist (male, 20s) was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other serious injuries to persons was reported.

“The road is currently closed and is expected to remain closed overnight and into tomorrow morning (Wednesday 24th April 2024) with local diversions in place as Forensic Collision Investigators conduct an examination of the scene. 

“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Ballinahina area between 5:45pm and 6:10pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Watercourse Road Garda Station on 021 4558260, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

The Donegal collision, a single-vehicle crash involving a woman in her 80s, occurred on the N56, Ballina Road, at Falcarragh.

The incident occurred at around 1.30pm on Tuesday and the woman was taken to hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.

In a statement to JOE yesterday, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal single vehicle road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 1:30pm on Tuesday 23rd April 2024 on the N56, Ballina Road, at Falcarragh in County Donegal.

“The driver and sole occupant of the car involved, a female in her 80s, was taken to hospital for the treatment of serious injuries. She was later pronounced deceased.

“The N56 at the Ballina Road in Falcarragh is currently closed. Local diversions are in place and Forensic Collision Investigators are conducting an examination of the scene.

“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Falcarragh area between 1:15pm and 1:45pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
