Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe is expected to step down as leader of the country after 37 years.

It’s been a whirlwind few hours in Zimbabwe as the ruling party on Sunday fired Robert Mugabe as its leader and gave the 93-year-old leader just 24 hours to step down as president or face impeachment.

He’s expected to address the public on the Zimbabwe national broadcaster on Sunday evening with sources claiming that he will resign from power.

Mugabe was voted out of his party on Sunday, as was his wife who many had expected would take over from him, and replaced as leader of the party by Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mnangagwa was fired by Mugabe earlier this month and fled the country stating that he feared for his life.

Mugabe spent ten years in prison earlier in his life before toppling white rule in the country and becoming Zimbabwe’s first Prime Minister in 1980.

He was initially hailed as a revolutionary and a reformer but he went on to oversee a series of financial crises and political repression in the country.
