Roddy Doyle speaks out against “very misleading headline” after comments on misogyny in Irish theatre

Carl Kinsella

One of Ireland’s best-loved novelists Roddy Doyle has spoken out over what he feels is a “very misleading headline” on a story about his comments on misogyny in Irish theatre.

The headline, in the Irish Independent, read “Roddy Doyle not aware of ‘misogynistic men’ in theatre” following an effort by several in the world of Irish theatre to create a sharper focus on sexual abuse in the culture.

In a statement on Facebook, Doyle said that the headline did not reflect his actual comments.

“This headline is very misleading,” he wrote. “I didn’t say I was unaware of misogynistic men in theatre. They are everywhere else, so I don’t know why theatre would be immune. What I said was, I hadn’t witnessed misogyny in the rehearsal room – which is true. I don’t for a second doubt the truth of the stories women in Irish theatre have been telling.”
