The Irishman was attacked outside of Anfield earlier this year.

21-year-old Roma supporter Filippo Lombardi has been found not guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Liverpool fan Sean Cox. The jury took nine hours to decide a majority verdict.

Lombardi, 21, was cleared by a jury at Preston Crown Court, but the Italian will be sentenced for a separate charge of violent disorder, which he admitted.

The attack happened outside Anfield ahead of the Champions League semi-final tie between Liverpool and Roma on April 26.

Mr Cox, a 53-year-old father-of-three from Meath, was left in a critical condition after the incident.

The Irishman was transferred to Walton Neurological Centre in Liverpool, where he was placed in a medically induced coma shortly after undergoing surgery.

Mr Cox was then airlifted from Liverpool’s Walton Centre to Beaumont Hospital. In recent weeks, a fundraising campaign has been launched to help pay for Mr Cox’s medical bills with a figure of €500,000 targeted in order to provide long term care and support.

As the campaign states, Mr Cox has “recently commenced a programme of rehabilitation in Dún Laoghaire and following this will continue to require ongoing and intensive long term care and support”.

Daniele Scuisco, another Roma fan who was involved in the attack, was previously jailed for two months.

Scuisco was not sentenced for the attack on Mr Cox, but rather for taking part in the actions that may have led to that incident.
