They announcement was made on Wednesday.

RTÉ has deferred its decision to relocate Lyric FM studios from Limerick, following a request from the government.

On Tuesday, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar told the Dáil that any decision on moving Lyric FM from Limerick should be deferred until the Commission on the Future of Public Service Broadcasting completes its work.

The commission is set to make its recommendations next September.

In a note to staff on Wednesday, RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes said RTÉ was happy to comply with the Taoiseach’s request and that the Department of Communications had been made aware.

However she stressed a quick response was vital considering the “persistent public discussion” around Lyric FM.

The plan to move the music station between Cork and Dublin was part of a radical cost cutting plan by RTÉ to reduce their projected costs over the next three years.

The week, the government also agreed to provide an additional €50 million funding towards public service broadcasting, with approximately €10 million going to RTÉ in the next year.
