Ryanair issues response regarding 24-hour pilot strike

The airline is pleading with FÓRSA to cancel the scheduled strike.

Ryanair has called on public service trade union FÓRSA to halt all strike action set to go ahead later this month.

The budget airline took to Twitter on Friday afternoon to plead with the union not to allow strikes to go ahead, claiming that the industrial action was only supported by 27% of Ryanair’s pilots, ensuring no mandate.

“Ryanair’s passengers should not be disrupted next Thursday when this strike has the support of just 94 of Ryanair’s over 350 pilots,” the post reads.

“This is a quorum of just 27%, and significantly less than one-third of Ryanair’s Irish pilots.”

This is the second time that Ryanair has called on FÓRSA to abandon strike action.

In a similar tweet posted on Thursday, the airline’s media team called the strike “unnecessary” and extended an invite to meet with them and discuss details further.

This comes after news on Wednesday which saw Ryanair cabin crews in four countries confirm that they will join their colleagues in strike action in the middle of July.

Cabin crews in Portugal, Italy, Spain and Belgium will stage a 24-hour strike on 25 July and a 24-hour strike in Portugal, Spain and Belgium on 26 July.

Earlier this week, FÓRSA published a post to their website stating that The Irish Airline Pilots Association (IALPA), a branch of Fórsa trade union, responded to Ryanair correspondence sent on Wednesday, on the issue of industrial action by directly-employed Ryanair pilots due to take place next Thursday.

“At every stage we have consulted our members and they took the decision to proceed with the ballot and serve notice because they have seen no evidence whatsoever on the part of Ryanair management to engage in meaningful negotiations with a view to reaching agreement on the issues they have presented to the company,” the post read.

“It is yet another example of a Ryanair view which is “it’s either our way or no way.”
