There are six confirmed cases of the virus in the Republic of Ireland.

A school in Clare has advised parents it will close for two weeks as a precautionary measure after a student in the school tested positive for coronavirus.

In a text sent to parents on Wednesday night, school management said: “A child in our school has tested positive for Covid-19 and as a precaution, school is closed from [Thursday] for 14 days. Re-opening 18th March. Public health doctors will contact you individually from tomorrow on.”

The text also informed parents that confirmation in the school has been cancelled.

It’s understood that other schools in the county are considering closures for a two week period.

It’s believed the the case is part of the group of four cases that were announced on Wednesday evening by the Department of Health.

All four are from a family who recently returned from a trip in an infected area in Italy.

The Department has said all the confirmed cases in the Republic have occurred in people who have travelled home from infected regions in Italy.
