One man has been confirmed dead after a trawler sunk off the Wexford coast on Saturday night while another is missing.

The search for a man lost at sea has been stood down for the night according to Ireland’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

It is due to resume first thing in the morning.

The RNLI issued the update on their Twitter account on Sunday evening.

A garda spokesperson issued a statement on Sunday morning, which read: “On Sunday, 5 January 2020, shortly before midnight, Gardaí and the Coastguard were alerted to reports that a trawler had gone missing off the Wexford coast with two men on board.

“A major search operation is underway and continues to be carried out with the RNLI and Coastguard Helicopter 117 attending. One male in his 60s was recovered from the water and was taken to University Hospital Waterford where he has since passed away. Searches continue for the second man.”

The man who died has been named locally.
