That sinking feeling…

Magheracloone GAA Club in Monaghan was devastated in September when a sinkhole opened up across its pitch, next to a national school.

Now, concerns have been raised again, as another sinkhole has appeared in Magheracloone. This time, the hole was 9 metres in diameter. Monaghan County Council closed the LP4900 road at Drumgossat as a precaution.

A statement from the county council reads: “Following the emergence of a new sinkhole on lands owned by Gyproc, Monaghan County Council has closed the LP4900 local road at Drumgossat, Magheracloone as a precautionary measure, with immediate effect.

“The sinkhole measuring 9 metres in diameter is located 35 metres from the local road. Local diversions are now operating to the school and church and the road will remain closed until further notice.”

MEP in the area Matt Carthy said: “Hopefully this development will prove not to be a serious or dangerous development.  However, I note that Monaghan County Council have closed a local road as a precautionary measure.”

“Concerns of a serious mine collapse have been widespread in Magheracloone for several years.  Following the events of September, which led to the closure of the GAA and community centre facilities, many were hopeful that their concerns would now be taken seriously by government.

“It is now clear that the assurances they deserve can only be delivered through a comprehensive and independent investigation.”
