Section of the M6 motorway is closed after serious traffic collision in Westmeath

Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene of a serious traffic collision on the M6 at junction 5, Kilbeggan.

At least five vehicles are involved in the crash and the motorway will be closed in both directions until further notice. Motorists are asked to divert to the N52.

The Eastbound carriageway of the M6 remains closed between J4 and J5. The Westbound carriageway of the M6 has re-opened.

AA Roadwatch have added: “M6 remains closed eastbound between J5 Tullamore and J3 Rochfortbridge after a collision but the westbound carriageway has been reopened. Gardaí advise drivers to divert via the N52. A recent hail shower has reportedly caused slippery road conditions in the area so extra caution is needed.”

Update: 

Gardaí in Athlone, Co Westmeath are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision today, Sunday 17th March 2019.

The collision occurred on the M6 just after junction 5 eastbound near Kilbeggan, five cars were involved.

A male driver of one of the cars in his 60s was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene, his female passenger also in her 60s was injured and was removed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

The four drivers and five passengers of the other cars involved were taken to the Midland Regional Hospitals in Mullingar and Tullamore. One other passenger has what is described as serious injuries and was taken by Helicopter to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

A report has been sent to the local Coroner and the scene is preserved for examination by Garda forensic collision investigators. The stretch of road remains closed
