Seven Pomeranian puppies retrieved after Gardaí stop car on the M7

The puppies were too young to be separated from their mother.

Seven puppies have been seized by Gardaí after they were discovered in the boot of a car during a traffic stop.

Gardaí stopped the speeding motorist on the M7 recently and the seven Pomeranian puppies were found in the boot of the car.

None of the puppies had been vaccinated or microchipped and Gardaí said they were too young to be separated from their mother.

The puppies have been taken into the care of the Kildare & West Wicklow SPCA.

The issue of dogs is a hot topic at the moment and earlier this year new laws were introduced for those who sell or supply five or more pets in a calendar year.

Gardaí also recently issued advice to the public to prevent dog thefts and urged owners to take a number of steps, including:

  • Microchipping your dog.
  • Keep your dog in your sight.
  • Consider getting CCTV.
  • Don’t tie up your dog outside.
  • Report any thefts immediately.
  • Only buy from a trusted source.

Speaking last month, Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Ber Leetch said “We are advising everyone to take precautions for their dog’s safety.

“For your dog’s security, I would recommend they are microchipped so that they can be easily identified if found and returned to the owner.

“Remember if you have just purchased a dog to get the details on the chip updated to reflect your details. Also place contact details on their collar in the event that they escape. Ensure that your home and garden are secure to prevent theft and deter potential culprits.”
