He made the statement in a briefing to his cabinet colleagues.

Minister for Transport Shane Ross has highlighted the precarious financial position of Bus Éireann and warned that if it continues on the same path, it will be insolvent within two years.

In a briefing to his Cabinet colleagues today, Ross said that the bus service was at crisis point, according to RTÉ.

He said that the company had losses of €6.5 million last year and the expressway service that it offered was hemorrhaging money.

In September this year, the company announced that it wanted to separate the expressway service from the rest of the company and slim down on staff in a bid to cut costs.

It also wants to change terms and conditions of employment and sub-contract a number of routes.

Meanwhile, the Labour Court recommendations – accepted by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, as well as the Garda Representative Association over the past day – has fuelled pay demands by other public service unions.
