Shot fired from Garda firearm at scene of arrest of two men in Cork

Two men have been arrested following an incident in which a shot was discharged from a Garda firearm in Mallow in Cork on Thursday evening (21 May).

Gardaí in Mallow attended the scene of an incident that occurred at approximately 8.30pm at Spa, Mitchelstown Road, Mallow, when a Garda firearm discharged one single shot.

It is believed a man in his 40s was shot by an armed Garda at a checkpoint after failing to stop and driving at a Garda; it is reported that he was struck in the shoulder and his injuries are non-life-threatening.

As a result of the incident, two men have been arrested and are currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at Mallow Garda station. Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of the incident.

Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) have been notified, have attended the scene of the incident and will conduct their investigation into the discharge of a Garda firearm.
